The summer holidays are behind us and the serious stuff has begun – yes, it’s the start of the football season again. No, not the Premiership, much more important than that – the Wallasey Junior Football League Ladies division of course.

Following our first training session on Thursday evening with a full squad of 15 girls, our first game of the new season saw us face our closest rivals from last season, Greenleas U16 Ladies. Last season honours were even with a 2-1 win for both teams in two closely contested games.

We welcomed six new players to the squad from last year’s U14s including Zoe taking her place in goal. On arriving at the Delph pitch the girls were told that due to injury and illness we would be down to just the one substitute, which was going to be tough on such a hot and sunny day.

The girls began the game confidently and started to knock the ball around well and five minutes before half time a good ball into the box found Molly unchallenged five yards out. With the coolness of a seasoned professional she put the ball confidently in the back of the net for a well deserved opening goal of the game and the new season. Waverton U16s were back!

Good pressure from Greenleas then forced a corner which was hit low into the box and turned in from close range past Zoe for the equaliser. Then with just seconds remaining of the first half one of the Greenleas midfielders picked up the ball on the half way line and let an unstoppable shot go from 25 yards which flew into the top corner for a 2-1 lead at half time.

Following a well deserved half time break the girls created a number of chances and continued to try to play the passing football they have become known for but were unable to get the goal they deserved. With just a few minutes to go Mel, was thrown up front and managed to cause the Greenleas defence some problems allowing Emily to get in a good low shot on goal which was well saved by the keeper’s outstretched foot .

In the final seconds of the game Greenleas floated the ball over from a corner and the Greenleas’ player of the match Hannah Monks headed in the third goal.

Final score was 3 – 1 to Greenleas.

At the end of the game the Greenleas coach praised our girls for continuing to play a passing game throughout the game.

Well done to all the squad who will have the chance for revenge when they play Greenleas again in the Cup on 26^th September.

Training will be on Thursday 17^th this week at the Waverton field at 6pm

Next game is on Saturday 19^th September at home against Upton, KO at 11am
