Can you feel the silence?

AFC Waverton 2 - Wallasey Wanderers 8

A cold and windy day on the Waverton field. Goals and the pitches all set up by 9am courtesy of Mike and Steve's 8:15 arrival. Everything all in place. Girls arrived on time. Good chance of a briefing talk before the game, but would they be quiet?

"Listen girls, no listen, no listen, just listen, be quiet and listen to what we have to say".

Wanted to say - first- this is what we want Cara to do at goal kicks and this is what the rest of the team need to do, and second play the game and don't watch - make sure nobody gets behind you unmarked. Did they listen?

Where did 4 of Wallasey Wanderers goals come from? - our players being the wrong side of their players and not clearing the ball. Chatty off the pitch and quiet as mice on it.

Good start to the game. Pretty even. The Wanderers score two goals. We get one back through a great Emma shot on the half volley. Candidate for goal of the season and better than the one at home to Greenleas. They get another. We get one back from a great move between Lily and Laura and Olivia who ran and finished excellently from a narrow angle. Another goal of the season candidate. Second half defending for most of the period. What a save from Cara. And another one. My she can stop high shots. Some Waverton chances, loads of our goal kicks and then game over.

From now on, we may split the squad into two. The girls who want to chat are stopping those girls who want to listen and learn and some girls have told us that they are really fed up with the chatting. It was the thing that Heather had a go at the team for last April and it is still a big issue. So we will have a group who can chat as much as they like and a group who will listen and learn. This latter group will play more of the game from now on.

The teams that we play in this league are good, but we are good too. We can do better if we just improve some simple things, but we won't do that if we think we know better or aren't really that bothered. Believe girls. Believe.

MOM Cara (again!), for Wallasey Wanderers Alex Edwards.

The boys done good, the girls done better.

Greenleas 5 - AFC Waverton 3

Entertaining game at a windy St Georges this morning saw the home side claim the points after coming back from 2-0 down. Waverton continued the excellent form of last week against Upton and went 2-0 up in the first half through a brilliant Kiera looping shot for the first and a solid low Caitlin shot for the second. On the stroke of half time the home side got a goal back and then got the advantage in the second half. Waverton got one back again through Kiera but the visitors got the fifth leaving too much for our girls to do in the last 10, despite the efforts of Kiera, Emma and Caitlin who all went close. A good performance against a good side. Some learning points to come out of it and none less so to learn just how good Ellie Mageean is.

More detailed report to follow.

MOM for us , Cara, and for Greenleas - Jade Gilbert.

Directions on here on Friday eve. Anybody need a lift tel/text Mike 07901552261 or leave comment below.

Anyway where does everyone want to go on the Christmas night out?

Take M53 to Junction 1. Head off left down slip road and at roundabout take first exit to Wallasey following signs A554 to New Brighton and Wallasey. Keep on this dual carriageway and ignore turn offs for Leasowe and for Wallasey. Keep on this road as it goes into a single carriageway and into the housing area of New Brighton. You will go past a big church on the right and then soon after turn right into Harrison Drive. Follow this for 200 yards and then turn left into Grove Road (there are some car showrooms at this junction). Keep on this road past the Nelson Pub on the right and just past a park on the right turn right into Claremount Road. St Georges School is 200 yards on the left. Park on this road or in Lyndhurst Avenue just before the school. If you go past the church on the right you've gone too far. The field is at the back of the school.

The logic of the league rules

The Wallasey League have tonight told our representative at the League meeting that they don't like us passing comment on our website about their levying of fines for giving a months notice that we couldn't play a game that if we had played we would have been fined anyway as the registered coach couldn't make it and that is against the rules which incurs a fine.

They have also told us that they will on principle fine us for giving less than a months notice that we cannot make a game. It's now 21 November and fixtures have not been published for December 3, 10, or 17, all less than a month away. Just talk us through that again.

They have also said that if we fail to attend one of the monthly meetings will be fined £15 to cover administrative costs. These are the administrative costs of posting out the agenda and minutes of the previous meetings minutes and the agenda for the meeting we just missed. The Chairman of the League says it is an FA rule that these are sent out in paper form not by email. They won't send though send out the agendas in advance though by post or email. We have only missed one meeting this season but still get charged an admin fee.

So gentlemen of the League, we won't pass any further comment. Well not this week.

That's more like it

Upton 4 - AFC Waverton 1

A great performance from our girls today at Overchurch School, in this switched fixture against Upton.

A great opening 20 minutes saw the away team dominate but go behind. Lily and Emma had great chances to not only equalise but take the lead, but unfortunately the shots weren't just strong enough to beat the experienced 'keeper. Ellie Mageean returned to the defence and was outstanding. Kiera played up front and Laura, Lauren, Lily and Emma took control of midfield. Ellie R and Sophie also kept switching around at the back.

A very good performance against 2 nearly completely different sides. There was great passing and movement and an excellent determination to do well. Much improved from the last two games, so excellent stuff girls and well done to Emma for a brilliant goal and player of the match award.

Report to follow.

Training as normal this Tuesday.

Upton now away on Saturday

As agreed with parents we have agreed to switch the game tomorrow to Upton's ground. Same ko, 11:00. Please meet at 10:40, some of our own parents and girls have to be away by just after 12 so we need to ko on time and therefore we need to. E there to warm up on time. The two Ellies need lifts, presumably everybody else is sorted. I have no apologies except Olivia, so expect a full turnout

Directions to Overchurch school below, but most of you will have been there recently.

Take M53 to J2 go briefly along the spur (known as the Moreton spur) and take first slip off it, up to the junction, turn left and Overchurch School is about 1/4 mile on the left hand side. Park at the back of the school.

Wallasey Game off

Just in case of doubt, the game on Saturday v Wallasey Wanderers at The Delph is off. The reason is that Mike is away and the League won't allow us to go without the registered coach. We got fined and warned for this once before so are not taking any chances. We love this League.

Training as usual on Tuesday. 8pm at Northgate. Make sure you bring a drink and go to the loo before you come. Last week was like being at an incontinence convention.

Sunday, November 6, 2011

Training this Tuesday

Training takes place again this Tuesday at 8 pm at Northgate. Definitely on this week. If travelling through the Sainsburys roundabout please add 30 mins to your journey. I got stuck in there today and thought I'd never get out.

Lets have a good session and forget about last Saturday v Birkenhead. We should have got more out of the game but hey ho, that's how things go.

The game away at Wallasey Wanderers on Saturday is very likely to be off. Mike is away on a scouting mission in London and the League will not allow the team to play without the registered coach. Last time this happened we sent Simon Mageean (CRB/Chester League registered coach) to look after the side, we got fined and told off big style by the League, so this time we gave them a months notice and they still want to fine us for calling the game off. So we are fined if we play, fined if we don't. What a wonderful League this is. Don't forget to get those club subscriptions paid, we need to pay the Wallasey League its fines!

Birkenhead Youth game on

Unbelievably Birkenhead Youth have said that they can play us this Saturday at Waverton ko 11. We had assumed it would not go ahead so everyone will have made plans!

Who can play? We need to confirm asap. Text 07901552261

Team so far: Cara, Laura, Ellie M, Sophie, Emma, Lily, Kiera, Ellie R , Olivia, Kate, and Lauren
- yeah game on!

Apologies for the training issue on Wednesday. Northgate Arena did not inform us whatsoever and then they said they told us 6 months ago. Aah we only made the booking 3 months ago so that can't be true!

Not impressed but trying to keep 12 pumped up u16s girls calm for an hour was hard work when all they wanted to do was kick a football up and down the Arena corridor! And they did.

Waverton v Australia

A great morning for our girls to play against, play with and socialise with some of Australia's top girl footballers. Thanks to the Australians, Beth and Adele and all at the High School.

Saturday's game v Irby is cancelled because we cannot get enough players, but Irby sent us a nice message:
" Its a shame that it has had to be cancelled. We love coming to Waverton, such a brilliant set up and friendly parents and players. Irby Juniors FC"

Can't ask for anymore than that can we?

See everyone on Tuesday at Northgate

Training and finance

Only 4 girls at training tonight and they had a good workout. We'd appreciate knowing in advance if girls can't make it to training so we can try to cancel if numbers are very low. It costs us £21 each week to hire the hall so we are £14 down on the night. Ooch. A big hole in my pocket.

Australia game on this Thursday. ko 10am. Lets give them a big Waverton welcome!

We have cancelled Saturday's home game v Irby as only Sophie, Lily and Laura were available. Irby will get the points and we get fined. Another hole in our pocket.

Australian game details

We're meeting Magnus at Christleton High School later today and will update information on here but the Thursday game is on. 8 a side at the High School. Ko 10am.

We have a team of 9. Lucie, Cara, Ellie M, Lily, Kate, Lauren, Laura, and two guest players Adele and Beth.

Waltzing ma cara

Upton 8 - AFC Waverton 0.

Report to follow on yesterday's game at Upton. Player of the match was Emma. It was actually a decent game and Bill the ref says the girls just need to believe in themselves more, that they actually really want to win the ball. Ellie M was unwell and Sophie (unlucky again!) got a bang on the head and a twist of her ankle, so we were not at 100%. We played well though and Emma, Lily and Ellie R were very unlucky not to score.

Training Tuesday as normal.

Game versus the Australians at Christleton High School on Thursday morning. We are down on numbers and so are hoping to bring in others to make up the 8. Can those who have yet to let us know of availability please do so immediately.

Sticks and Stones

AFC Waverton 4 - Greenleas 2

The first win of the season came on a sunny Autumn morning on the big pitch at Waverton. Three goals for Caitlin and a beauty from Emma ensured victory in a tense and challenging game.

With 12 Waverton players available, it was always going to be difficult to make the choices about starting positions and the bringing on of subs during the game. The starting 7 was:

The hatted Cara in the nets, a back two of Kate and headbanging Sophie, a middle three of Lily, Emma and Kiera and a striking one of Caitlin. On the bench were Lauren, Laura, the two Ellies and Olivia.

Kiera won the toss and we kicked off kicking away from the low Autumn sun, in order to try to get a first half advantage. After a period of pressure from the visitors, Waverton took the lead on the break when a great pass found Caitlin who shot low and hard into the corner of the net. Cue celebration numero uno.

This gave the girls confidence and some good passing football was being played. Kate and Sophie were holding the back together very well and Cara was making some good saves.

At 1-0 at half time, the advice to the girls was to keep playing like they were, keep the shape and do not let heads go down if Greenleas scored.

In the second half Greenleas equalised when the home defence did not clear the ball properly from a corner. Greenleas were piling on the pressure with corner after corner but it just took one not to be defended properly and we paid the penalty.

Following the half time advice well though the girls kept their heads up and despite constant subbing, the shape was kept well and Caitlin got another goal to restore the lead. Greenleas didn't like going behind again but then from a great ball from Lily, Emma unleashed an unstoppable shot into the back of the net from far out. Emma's celebration was brilliant and her strike made the win on the cards. Caitlin completed her hatrick when, unmarked at the far post, she belted a fantastic cross from the right from Kiera into the back of the net. The goal machine had announced her comeback.

Greenleas got a goal back but the clock was ticking away and it all came to an end soon after.

This was a brilliant, emphatic and well deserved win. If only we'd played this well against Irby two weeks ago, but hey that's how it goes sometimes. It was a squad game and all of the girls stuck to their task well and can be proud of themselves. The girls were a credit to the club for the way in which they conducted themselves throughout the game in what were very difficult circumstances.

Well done Laura, Lauren, Ellie, Kate, Lily, Kiera, Emma, Olivia, Ellie, Caitlin and Sophie. Special mention for player of the match Cara who was superb in goal.

Please let Mike know of availability straight away as the Australians will fix up a game somewhere else if we can't play them.

Game off - Training instead

An absolute great training session on Tuesday at Northgate. See why we thought the place so good to play football? Well done everyone and it was great to have our Lucie back.

Saturday's game v Birkenhead Yoof is off. They can't get enough players and have yet to fulfil a fixture this season. There's been a big drop out in the Wallasey League this season and some teams have folded.

Anyway we shall train instead! We shall have a session on the field at Waverton from 9:30-10:30. We'll get the goals out for a proper session.

See you there. Absent notes only allowed for Sophie and Olivia who are going to meet the Duke of Edinburgh. I think that's what they said.

Tuesday, October 4, 2011

Training Tonight

Winter (ok right, two days ago people were walking through town in beach wear) starts tonight at Northgate Arena. 8-9. Prompt start needed. Cost £2. Indoor trainers. Please bring drink.

We know this is not ideal both in venue (although it is good for football) and time, but we have spent hours trying venue after venue without success. If anybody has any contacts with places we havent gone to, please let us know, but Upton, Christleton, College, Old Hall Farm etc have all been tried. We can arrange some lift share, if people are struggling.

This Saturday we are scheduled to play away at Birkenhead Ladies, but we understand the fixture is in doubt as they haven't been able to fullfill any fixtures this season. In this case we have an hour long training session at Waverton using our goals. 9:30-10:30.

Gone to the dogs

Irby 9 - AFC Waverton 0

More a July morning at Irby Mill than October. 11 girls on parade from Waverton, but only 6 had shown up by 9:25. Cara insisted on walking her dog on the pitch instead of warming up, an indication of things to come.

The starting line up was: Cara now without canine assistant in goal, Ellie and Sophie at the back; Lily, Kiera and Emma in midfield and Caitlin up front. On the bench were Olivia, Kate, Ellie R and the very late Laura. We missed our Lucie.

For the first 10 minutes it was reasonably even but with Irby creating more chances. Once they found the back of the net, our heads went down (as always) and we let them take as many goals as they could. We are much better than this, but allowed ourselves to be beaten easily by half time. The fantastic displays against Greenleas and Wallasey were distant memories, as we looked like a team of strangers.

Kiera took over in goal at half time and Lily in centre of midfield. Kate did really well at the back alongside the excellent Ellie M, and we looked much better but without having a real chance on goal.

It was just one of those days, but we can do much better than this. We have a strong squad and we just need to work hard and believe in ourselves.

Have a good weekend everyone.

MOM - Kiera and Laura Shone for Irby.

Training - Tuesday at Northgate Arena - 8-9. Cost £2 payable on the night.

Game v Irby on Saturday

This Saturday we play Irby at Irby Mill. Ko is 9:30. Meet at 9. If anybody needs a lift please let Mike know.

With 13 players to choose from now, competition for places is strong. We will look to play the strongest side we can and give those girls who give everything in training a chance.

Confirmed players so far:

Lucie, Kiera, Ellie R, Lily, Cara, Laura, Sophie, Kate, Emma, Ellie M

Directions:

Take the M53 to the Arrowe Park junction (Junction 3).

Turn left and go up to the roundabout at the top by the Arrowe Park pub. Turn left and go past Landican cemetery to a roundabout. Turn right and then soon after, opposite a block of flats, look to turn off right again along Thingwall Road towards Irby. Go along that road all the way (1 mile), and just after passing The Shippons pub you'll reach a T junction. Turn right go past the Anchor Pub on the left (starting to see a pattern here?) and then immediately right again into Manor Road. Then left at the end onto Mill Hill Road and then soon after right into the car park. If lost call 07901552261 and you'll be talked in.

Training early start

Training this week will start earlier because it is getting really dark early in the evening. The session will be on Tuesday 6:30-7:30 at Waverton. This will be the final outdoor session.

Report on last Saturday's game against Wallasey Wanderers below.

Blanket on the Ground

AFC Waverton 0 - Wallasey Wanderers 9 (ish)

The depth of this season's squad was clearly evident when 10 girls turned up for this game despite Caitlin, Olivia and Kiera all being unavailable. Emma is the latest recruit rejoining after a short spell with Chester City Ladies and took up her place in the centre of midfield.

Lily and the Ellies (sounds like a good name for a girl band), had all been ill during the week and were below par. Out of the 10 players available 7 of them wanted to play in defence. What has happened? When I played junior football, nobody ever wanted to play in defence. When the girls were asked the answers were:

"I can't run"
"My shoulder hurts"
"I want to be near Lucie"
'I've just had my breakfast"
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
"Look I've had such a stressful week alright"

So the team, in standard 2-3-1 formation, was: Cara in the nets, Ellie M and the headbanging Sophie at the back, Emma in centre of the midfield with texting Lauren and Ellie R beside her and Laura up front. Lily, Lucie and the late Kate were the bench warmers. Well this week, courtesy of Sophie's mum, we had a blanket for the subs to sit on. And very nice it was too with a lovely pattern. Oh we are so sophisticated at Waverton. All that was missing was the cucumber sandwiches, lashings of ginger beer and a watching Vicar.

For the first 10 minutes or so, the Wanderers in splendid new orange, were on top but Waverton defended well and looked good on the breakaway. The home side could have easily gone ahead on 5 minutes when a great move saw Laura put away in front of goal, but she just couldn't get her shot on target. A great move and good opportunity.

The Wanderers were playing some good football and once the first goal went in our heads dropped a little. Cara made some great saves and raised heartrates with her rushing out of goal. Lauren played really well in the first half and Laura was tricky up front against the much bigger defenders. Another header hit the bar. Emma battled well and had to come off with a sore shoulder to be replaced by Lily. Kate came on too in midfield.

At half time Lucie came on to replace Cara in goal and was so fired up to do well. Unfortunately the goals kept coming and Lucie was disappointed that she couldn't keep some of them out. One was a long ball which bounced high and over her head and another was a drop, but she made some brilliant saves too. The bionic woman (ask your parents) Emma was playing well and linking up with Lily. Lily played the pass of the match through to Kate who shot wide.

All in all a poor scoreline, but the balance of play was much closer. Wanderers are good, the best we have played this season, but don't be down you little yellow shirted ones. You played well, never gave up and we're all proud of you.

The goals were taken down, the corner flags put away, the players driven away and all that was left was the blanket on the ground. It's in the back of my car now Shirley.

Emma was the player of the match - Chloe Forshaw for Wallasey Wanderers

Rain rain go away and don't flippin' come back

Greenleas 4 - AFC Waverton 2

The newly kitted out Waverton girls arrived on time at St Georges School to be faced with two challenges. The first was that the Greenleas management team had hundreds of bits of Samba goals on the floor trying to find enough parts to make a pair of goals. The second was a downpour like you've never seen before. The mother of all downpours. Everyone took shelter under a tree whilst the goals were put together and the rain passed. Except that was Lily and Lucie who decided to go for a kick about.

Finally we got to kick off, although no right sized nets could be found so we were netless. Netless in Wallasey. The team lined up: Lucie, Ellie R, Sophie, Lily, Laura, Olivia, and for her first game of the season, Caitlin. On the wet bench were Lauren, Cara and Kate.

As last week, the first few minutes went ok but Greenleas were threatening. We just couldn't clear our lines and so it proved when the hooped shirted girl had all the time to pick her spot as all the Waverton shirts watched. Lucie went made with her defence. Heads went down and another was conceded, but a great move involving Lily got the ball to Caitlin who jinked past the last defender and whacked the ball into the virtual net. Back in it and the goal machine announced her arrival.

Lauren was now playing as was the determined Cara in midfield and it stayed like that into the second half. Lucie was again left exposed for a 3rd home goal but Waverton played so well and never gave up. Kate was fantastic at the back and looked a natural whilst Lauren looked good in midfield. Lily was running the centre of midfield and Laura was setting up chances from the right.

A great bit of pressure from Olivia, Ellie and Laura caused panic in the home defence and a mix up led to Olivia being gifted a chance to tap the ball home for the second goal in successive games.

In a brave challenge for the ball, Sophie banged her head and had to go off to receive treatment. She had been superb in defence again and it was going to be tough for Kate and Ellie to keep out Greenleas. And so it proved as they got a fourth near the end, but Waverton kept trying and Lily and Laura both had very close efforts before Ellie unleased a shot which just went wide.

It was a great encounter against a very strong and good footballing side and shows how much stronger this team is from the u16s last year. All of the girls should be proud of what they achieved to day. There were lots of candidates for player of the match and in our view a special mention should be made of Kate, who looked really good today at the back. Lucie though was chosen. One second half save was absolute top quality in palming a thunderbolt shot over the bar.

As the game finished, the heavens opened and we all ran for the cover of the trees once again.

Player of the match - Lucie, for Greenleas, Shannon Forsyth.

Greenleas away this Saturday

Our first away trip of the season is up to Wallasey to play Greenleas. Ko is 11am at St Thomas' school. Directions below later.

Please meet at 10:40, but we always seem to be late there and once had to kick off with 2 less players stuck in traffic. So allow enough time and don't follow the Sat Nav.

Kiera is away but everyone else is available so the squad is:

Ellie M, Ellie R, Lauren, Kate, Sophie, Lily, Cara, Lucie, Laura, Caitlin and Olivia. Please sign in on the right to confirm availability.

See you there. If anybody needs a lift there or back or both, call/text Mike on 07901552261 or leave a comment below.

Here, there and everywhere.

AFC Waverton 2 - Upton 9

There's always something special about the first game of the season and ours was no different. New kit, new players, nicely mown grass, sunshine, and on the downside, sore feet from the hard ground, and a feeling of 'how did I get so unfit?' But this was a good start. Despite the result, this was a very good performance from a brand new team who for half the game held the score even and produced some excellent passing football. It can only get better.

In the 1980s England had two top class goalkeepers and the manager Ron Greenwood couldn't decide which he should play. His answer was to alternate them. So we too have a Clemence/Shilton situation with Cara and Lucie, two excellent goalies battling to get the number one shirt. Today we played one first half, the other the second.

On a bright sunny September morning, the newly shirted girls lined up in a 2-3-1 formation. At the back were the dependable duo, Ellie M and Sophie. In the centre of the middle was Kiera with Laura and Lily either side, and up front there Olivia was the lone ranger in search of goals despite her saying she'd never played up front before. Cara went between the sticks for the first half with Lucie on the bench alongside texting Laura.

For the first 15 minutes, Waverton were excellent. Sophie and Ellie dealt with the back well and in midfield Kiera linked up brilliantly with Lily and Laura. It was an superb display and a great start to the season. Upton though got a goal and our heads went down. Our biggest weakness. It's so tangible and it means we are more vulnerable to conceding and so it happened. More goals from the strong Upton side followed and at half time it was 6-0.

In the second half Lucie went in goal and Lauren continued in place of Laura for an initial period and she did very well. Again though Waverton played brilliantly with some excellent passing and movement in midfield. And then it came, the first home goal. An attack from Laura down the left led to the ball coming to Kiera who right in the centre jinked around the defender and blasted the ball home. Fantastic goal from a player who was having one of her best games for the club.

Upton got one back, unluckily for Lucie, and then another one. Olivia though supported by the now outfield Cara and Laura hit a great low shot into the bottom left hand corner. Upton scored right near the end but the second half showing was fantastic overall and bouyed by the home goals, the Waverton girls heads were kept up.

Lily played excellently in midfield and then when she dropped to the back when Ellie M had to go off after struggling to shake off her illness. Sophie was brilliant at the back although she was dead on her feet at the end. Laura buzzed and buzzed and was excellent and Olivia took her goal realy well. Lauren showed how much she has improved and did really well. Kiera won player of the match and deservedly so, she was here, there and everywhere. An excellent performance in her first full u16 game.

Lucie and Cara did really well. Good kicking and distribution from the two and some brilliant and brave saves from both.

Well done girls, for half the first and half the second period, you were outstanding and for the first game without the benefit of friendlies that was some achievement against a strong and sharp shooting Upton side. With improved fitness and getting to know each other more, it will gel much better. Not a bad start at all.

Player of the match - Kiera and for Upton Louise O'Brien.

Thanks to Robin for reffing and to the injured Kate for coming to cheer everyone on.
