A cold and windy day on the Waverton field. Goals and the pitches all set up by 9am courtesy of Mike and Steve's 8:15 arrival. Everything all in place. Girls arrived on time. Good chance of a briefing talk before the game, but would they be quiet?
"Listen girls, no listen, no listen, just listen, be quiet and listen to what we have to say".
Wanted to say - first- this is what we want Cara to do at goal kicks and this is what the rest of the team need to do, and second play the game and don't watch - make sure nobody gets behind you unmarked. Did they listen?
Where did 4 of Wallasey Wanderers goals come from? - our players being the wrong side of their players and not clearing the ball. Chatty off the pitch and quiet as mice on it.
Good start to the game. Pretty even. The Wanderers score two goals. We get one back through a great Emma shot on the half volley. Candidate for goal of the season and better than the one at home to Greenleas. They get another. We get one back from a great move between Lily and Laura and Olivia who ran and finished excellently from a narrow angle. Another goal of the season candidate. Second half defending for most of the period. What a save from Cara. And another one. My she can stop high shots. Some Waverton chances, loads of our goal kicks and then game over.
From now on, we may split the squad into two. The girls who want to chat are stopping those girls who want to listen and learn and some girls have told us that they are really fed up with the chatting. It was the thing that Heather had a go at the team for last April and it is still a big issue. So we will have a group who can chat as much as they like and a group who will listen and learn. This latter group will play more of the game from now on.
The teams that we play in this league are good, but we are good too. We can do better if we just improve some simple things, but we won't do that if we think we know better or aren't really that bothered. Believe girls. Believe.
MOM Cara (again!), for Wallasey Wanderers Alex Edwards.
