The first win of the season came on a sunny Autumn morning on the big pitch at Waverton. Three goals for Caitlin and a beauty from Emma ensured victory in a tense and challenging game.
With 12 Waverton players available, it was always going to be difficult to make the choices about starting positions and the bringing on of subs during the game. The starting 7 was:
The hatted Cara in the nets, a back two of Kate and headbanging Sophie, a middle three of Lily, Emma and Kiera and a striking one of Caitlin. On the bench were Lauren, Laura, the two Ellies and Olivia.
Kiera won the toss and we kicked off kicking away from the low Autumn sun, in order to try to get a first half advantage. After a period of pressure from the visitors, Waverton took the lead on the break when a great pass found Caitlin who shot low and hard into the corner of the net. Cue celebration numero uno.
This gave the girls confidence and some good passing football was being played. Kate and Sophie were holding the back together very well and Cara was making some good saves.
At 1-0 at half time, the advice to the girls was to keep playing like they were, keep the shape and do not let heads go down if Greenleas scored.
In the second half Greenleas equalised when the home defence did not clear the ball properly from a corner. Greenleas were piling on the pressure with corner after corner but it just took one not to be defended properly and we paid the penalty.
Following the half time advice well though the girls kept their heads up and despite constant subbing, the shape was kept well and Caitlin got another goal to restore the lead. Greenleas didn't like going behind again but then from a great ball from Lily, Emma unleashed an unstoppable shot into the back of the net from far out. Emma's celebration was brilliant and her strike made the win on the cards. Caitlin completed her hatrick when, unmarked at the far post, she belted a fantastic cross from the right from Kiera into the back of the net. The goal machine had announced her comeback.
Greenleas got a goal back but the clock was ticking away and it all came to an end soon after.
This was a brilliant, emphatic and well deserved win. If only we'd played this well against Irby two weeks ago, but hey that's how it goes sometimes. It was a squad game and all of the girls stuck to their task well and can be proud of themselves. The girls were a credit to the club for the way in which they conducted themselves throughout the game in what were very difficult circumstances.
Well done Laura, Lauren, Ellie, Kate, Lily, Kiera, Emma, Olivia, Ellie, Caitlin and Sophie. Special mention for player of the match Cara who was superb in goal.
