AFC Waverton 1 - Greenleas 3

A lovely sunny Autumn morning at Waverton and a decent game.

Both teams arrived with just enough players, such is the fragility of girls football in the Wallasey League. Whilst the girls stood around having a chat, Robin set to task in putting up the goals. "That's a number 4, it should be a number 2" "Where's the instructions gone?" "Which idiot put this goal down last time?"

Ready for kick off, the cunning plan saw Waverton take the horses field end so that our Lucie could start with the low sun on her back and whose dazzling rays would blind any would be Greenleas attacker. It worked for 3 minutes.

Emma captained the side, and played at the back alongside Ellie. Lily, Annaliese and debutant Amy started in midfield and up front we had in form Rebecca. Caitlin was ill, and Keira was singing for her supper somewhere. Will the impending tonsillotomy affect her singing voice? Just a thought.

All was well for a few minutes but then a ball came across to the near post, a pretty innocuous one, but it caught Lucie out and bounced in. However we got back in it straightaway when a great move from Emma and a fine run down the right from Ellie led to the ball being put low into the centre. The Greenleas keeper fumbled it and there was Rebecca to knock the ball home. 1-1. Emma forgot how to tie a shoelace and the game was stopped to sort it. Left over right, right over left then something about round the tree and down the hole. Sounds like a party game.

Annaliese had a good shot at goal, as did Emma. Amy chased. Lily was tricky in the middle and setting things up, but they just couldn't get through. Just before half time another relatively easy ball came in and Ellie and Lucie mixed things up a little and a green hooped girl got in and tapped home. 2-1.

In the second half Waverton played well and the game was very even. Amy went up front instead of Rebecca who dropped to midfield. Rebecca is playing really well this season and links up with Lily so effectively. Ellie, Lily and Emma had shots and Rebecca went close, but in pushing Ellie up for the equaliser in the last 10 minutes, it left a gap at the back and in the final minutes, a break from Greenleas ended up in the net as Lucie was left helpless.

Not as top notch a performance as against Birkenhead last time, but if Caitlin and Kiera had been available, we'd have had a stronger side. Well done girls, again, the performances have been very good in the last three games.
