There's an hilarious scene in Phoenix Nights where Paddy and Max are sitting in a van outside the club.  A group of dwarfs arrive and Max squinting his eyes, says to Paddy, "How far away are those people?'. It was a bit like that arriving at Victoria Park. As we sat in the car we looked across to the pitch and the Wirral Hawks girls warming up were partly hidden by the undulating nature of the Park and looked liked very very small people kicking into a big goal. Anyway it was funny at the time.

This was a very good performance by the girls. Kicking off up the huge slope at our call, we started with 6 against their 7, as Rebecca was lost somewhere in Birkenhead. For 15 minutes we had to do without her, but managed to do very well, conceding one and then grabbing an equaliser through Kiera.

Just as Rebecca arrived halfway through the first half, the Hawks scored to give them a 2-1 lead. That's how it stayed until half time.

Kicking down the slope the Waverton girls went for it. Loads and loads of chances were created but a lack of positivity in front of goal prevented us from capitalising on the opportunities. Emma, Lily, Rebecca, Kiera and Annaliese all went close. Lily and Rebecca were brilliant linking together down the left whilst Emma and Ellie were solid at the back. Crunching tackles were flying in on both sides, but everything was fair. Ellie was back to her 'close your eyes' tackling and Lily, Emma and Kiera all threw themselves into heavy tackling. Our girls took some challenges too, Lily was winded, Annaliese had a kick from behind and Rebecca a bang on the head. Emma was at her best playing in defence and the fitness effort paid off as she looked on top form.

In goal Lucie showed why she is the best keeper in the League. A string of save after save and diving to the feet of attackers in desperate muddy conditions showed how brave and strong she is. A well deserved man of the match award again for our Number 1.

At times the passing was fantastic and the tackling superb. The effort could not be faulted. Just a bit more confidence in front of goal and we would have been in with a chance of winning. The extra players that the Hawks squad have helped them too as our subless girls tired towards the end. All in all a great effort from both sides and a credit to girls football. Well done to Paul from Wirral Hawks for calling the game on yesterday.
